Augustine’s Confessions, Led by Steve Cooney and Pastor Josh Diack, Chapel. Augustine of Hippo is undoubtedly one of the greatest thinkers of Christian antiquity, and his Confessions are one of the great works of Western literature. In this intensely personal narrative, Augustine relates his rare ascent from a humble Algerian farm to the edge of the corridors of power at the imperial court in Milan, his struggle against the domination of his sexual nature, his renunciation of secular ambition and marriage, and the recovery of the faith his mother Monica had taught him during his childhood. As a class, we will aim to discuss the confessions and further unpack a few key themes found in it. In doing so, we will reflect upon God’s marvelous grace in the life of Augustine, a man who like all of us, desperately needed it. Books will be available at the first and second week of class.
